Bijan Sabet: Why Facebook Connect shouldn't be... →

bijan:
When I see startups that only offer FB Connect as the singular sign in option, I always get squeamish.
I tell founders they should support FB Connect but they also support Twitter sign-in as well as giving users an option to sign in the good old fashioned way : user id & password.
For me it’s as simple as this: when you require a Facebook sign-in, you are essentially...

Had a great 3.2 mile run tonight. Best time so far - about 27 minutes. I don’t know if any of you are a fan of Planet Money, but it’s a stellar podcast. Super easy to understand. The latest episode was on the App Store economy and it featured Marco Arment, who created one of my favorite apps on the planet, Instapaper. Highly recommend the podcast and the app.

Informationally, we are becoming lard-asses. In the pageview and ratings driven media economy, too much of the content these days is designed to be just like junk food to quickly boost quantifiable viewership. If you make content that is the intellectual equivalent of gummy bears, your site will appear to grow quickly

This is the best thing I’ve read about Path, and it perfectly articulates something I’ve thought not only about Path, but also a lot of other exemplars of the fussy, post-Apple wave of “high design” in tech products. Khoi Vinh has written about the same phenomenon, arguing that the...

Today marked the end of my second week of trailing for my first half marathon. I had a minor setback last week, but with a little bit of extra rest, today was probably the best run I’ve had yet. It felt great. I’ve really been trying to push myself more. I’ve also been reading a lot about nutrition, which is very important overall, but especially when your training for endurance....

The True Story of Audion →
This is such a fantastic story about one of the best MP3 players/encoders ever built for the Mac. I vividly remember using it prior to iTunes and loving it. The story is an important one for any music nerds out there.

For sure, Amazon is going to do really well and anybody with major e-commerce is going to do real well. But the new companies in e-commerce verticals are providing a very differentiating customer experience that is much more like shopping as entertainment.

On Sunday I went into Best Buy to buy a camera. I walked directly to the camera section and told a clerk that I wanted to purchase a specific model. The saleswoman unlocked the case, removed the camera, and walked me to a register nearby.
Such an incredible analogy. I will not only never buy anything at a Best Buy, but I can’t even stand walking into one. There’s just no...

In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. The most recent example of this was the National Defense Authorization Act, signed Dec. 31, which allows for the indefinite detention of citizens. At what point does the reduction of individual rights in our country change how we define ourselves?
Why we need to stop SOPA and PIPA - Joi Ito's Web →
Internet experts have observed that, beyond being dangerous to innovation, harmful to speech and potentially unconstitutional, SOPA and PIPA are unlikely to work. Countries that block access to prohibited websites by altering the domain name system - as Vietnam does in blocking access to Facebook - find that millions of users are able to circumvent this form of censorship. Millions of Vietnamese...

Indefinite detention is wrong. Bypassing the courts is wrong. Succumbing to fear until it dominates the law is wrong.
